Hi, I’m James.
I’m a recent Computer Science graduate with experience in full-stack software development and IT, and I’m currently figuring out where exactly I want to take that.
I started this blog to document that process - keep track of my progress and what I’ve learned, but most importantly, to hold myself accountable.
I aim to look back on this and see how well I’ve held up against my (extremely low) standards and constant FOMO regarding other career paths.
So, what am I doing?
Most of my experience so far has been software development, but recently I’ve found myself much more interested in the infrastructure underneath these systems.
Working in my current role, I gained a lot of exposure to servers, networking and systems administration which got me thinking about how I’d love to build and grow similar systems in future.
I had initially decided to build a homelab if I didn’t secure another internship this summer, but I was lucky enough to both land a role and consequently fall much deeper into the rabbit hole - courtesy of my manager. I wanted to give myself an environment to apply some of the practices used in real infrastructure, which I achieved at the cost of a new, nasty spending habit.
I’m still not sure where this will take me career-wise. Infrastructure, networking and cloud are all fields I want to explore further, and I’m happy to let the things I enjoy working on determine the direction I take next.
What’s next?
For now, I’d like to keep myself busy.
I’m building out the homelab and learning a lot during my current role. I’ll document my projects alongside whatever I’m studying or find interesting.
Hopefully I’ll have something worth writing about.
